Perched above the Jordan Valley, Umm Qais is the ancient city of Gadara, famed for once being a centre of scholars and poets. Its black basalt theatre, colonnaded streets and museum gaze across to the Sea of Galilee.
The hilltop position offers one of Jordan's most expansive views. Morning light is superb.
Plan your Umm Qais visit
Ancient Gadara, now known as Umm Qais, is distinctive because its archaeological remains sit on a hill with broad views toward the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee. The site includes a colonnaded street, terraces, theatres and remains of the later Ottoman village.
The northern setting makes Umm Qais especially rewarding as part of a wider route with Jerash and Ajloun. The Jordan Tourism Board also highlights community-based tourism in the area, so consider allowing time for local food, rural experiences or walking rather than visiting only the ruins.
Bring layers and water: the exposed hilltop can feel very different from Amman or the Jordan Valley depending on the season and time of day.
