Madaba, the 'City of Mosaics', is famous for the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land inside St George's church — the oldest surviving floor map of the region. Museums and local workshops carry the mosaic tradition into the present day.
Fun walking side streets and excellent grilled food make Madaba an easy half-day stop. It also works as a Dead Sea base.
Plan your Madaba visit
Madaba is particularly known for its Byzantine and Umayyad-era mosaics, with the famous Madaba Map displayed in St George’s Church. The city is also a practical base for combining cultural visits with Mount Nebo and nearby sites.
Allow time beyond the headline mosaic: small churches, archaeological remains, workshops and local food make the city more rewarding when explored on foot. Dress respectfully when entering churches and other religious sites.
Madaba works especially well as a stop between Amman and the Dead Sea or as part of a Mount Nebo and Baptism Site day.
