King Abdullah II, eldest son of King Hussein and Queen Muna, acceded to the throne on 7 February 1999, following his father's death. A former army officer, he has championed economic modernisation, education and political reform, and has positioned Jordan as a regional force for stability.

His 2016 constitutional amendments affirmed his authority.
