The Baptism Site of Jesus, known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, is one of the most important religious sites in the world. It is located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, about 9 kilometres north of the Dead Sea.
The site is believed to be where John the Baptist baptised Jesus, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a place of pilgrimage for Christians from around the world.
Visitors can walk through the site, see the remains of ancient churches and baptism pools, and visit the modern church. The atmosphere is calm and moving.
The Baptism Site is an easy day trip from Amman, and it is often combined with the Dead Sea and Madaba. Travellers can visit all three in a single day.
