Jerash flourished under Roman rule as part of the Decapolis, a league of Greek-Roman cities. Its colonnaded streets, extensive theatre and temples were spared the worst of later rebuilding, so the site reads like an outdoor history class.

Its festivals and chariot displays bring the past alive.
